Pseudanthias Bleeker, 1871

Type species Anthias pleurotaenia Bleeker, 1857, by subsequent designation of Bleeker, 1872. Anderson (2018) gave 66 as the number of species in the genus. Recent studies show the number to be 50. This new number is based on eight species, previously assigned to Pseudanthias, being removed by Gill (2022) and reconsidered as members of the genera Mirolabrichthys Herre (three species— evansi, pascalus, tuka) and Nemanthias Smith (five species— bartlettorum, bicolor, dispar, ignitus, regalis), the synonymyzing of two species ( albofasciatus; vizagensis), the reassigning of one species ( xanthomaculatus) to Odontanthias, the reclassification of eight others ( aurulentus, bimarginatus, flavoguttatus, lori, parvirostris, privitera, smithvanizi, unimarginatus) to Gill’s new genus Pyronotanthias, and the addition of three species of Pseudanthias described since the publication of Anderson, 2018.
