Valid name: Gorilla gorilla gorilla (Savage & Wyman, 1847)

Holotype: ZMB 83558 (= A 28.05.137), male, adult, skull without mandible, “Lobo-Mündung Station, nicht weit vom Dscha” [formerly station Lobo-River Estuary near Dja River], Cameroon; collected by Jacob, 10 July 1905.

Comment: Matschie (1905, p.282) mentioned the number 28051 for the holotype specimen. However, that is clearly a typo, the number belongs to “A 28.05.1” [from A-Catalog]. ZMB 28051 [from General catalog] belongs to an Apodemus agrarius specimen]. Specimen ZMB 83558 (= A 28.05.137) was identified as a holotype by Collin Groves (personal communication during a visit to the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin) based on several measurements, book entries, and collecting data.
