Distribution:Palaearctic (Ozerov 2005).
Comments:This species is particularly common on pig dung, muck hills and manure near farm-houses, but can also be caught on cow pastures at alower frequency. There are some records of swarming behavior, which is supposedly linked to hibernation (Pont 1987b), but to our knowledge such reports lack in Switzerland. As illustrated in Munari (1987), the morphology of the forefemur varies quiet drastically.
