TYPE LOCALITY: Guinea .

DISTRIBUTION: Zululand and Transvaal (South Africa) to Tanzania, N. Namibia, and Angola; C. and E. Africa to S. Somalia through Ethiopia to Kordofan (Sudan), and to Senegal in W. Africa.

COMMENT: Some authors have placed this species in Viverra; see Coetzee, 1977, Part 8: 17; but also see Ansell, 1978:38, who placed this species in Civettictis . Rosevear, 1974:167, noted differences in scent glands; Petter, 1969, Mammalia, 33: 607-635, discussed dental differences.
