Middle-late Miocene (Volhynian, Bessarabian): Eastern Paratethys Sea (Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia).
(Sladkovskaya 2017)
Genus Callumbonella Thiele, 1924
Type species. Gibbula gorgonarum P. Fischer, 1884 [= Callumbonella suturalis (Philippi, 1836)], type by typification of replaced name. Present-day, E Atlantic, NE Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea.
Diagnosis. Broad trochiform nacreous shell with nearly flat whorls, weakly incised suture and distinct basal angulation. Umbilicus fully sealed or reduced to narrow chink. Sculpture reduced to weak, faintly beaded spiral cords
Remarks. Callumbonella is a deep-water genus (Malaquias et al. 2003). As most of the classical European Neogene outcrops represent shallow water environments, the fossil record of this genus might be biased. The oldest records come from the latest Zanclean-early Piacenzian (Landau et al. 2003).
= Umbotrochus Thiele, 1924 (non Perner, 1904), type species: Gibbula gorgonarum P. Fischer, 1884 [= Callumbonella suturalis (Philippi, 1836)], type by monotypy.
