Type Locality: Peru, Dept. Junín, Río Perené (240 m).
Vernacular Names: Simon's Spiny-rat.
Synonyms: Proechimys hendeei Thomas 1926; Proechimys nigrofulvus Osgood 1944 .
Distribution: Western Amazon Basin from S Colombia to N Bolivia and W Brazil.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc) as P. simonsi and P. hendeei .
Discussion: Placed in simonsi group by Patton (1987). Gardner and Emmons (1984) included hendeei; considered a separate species by Eisenberg and Redford (1999). Karyotype has 2n=32 and FN=58 (Gardner and Emmons, 1984; Patton and Gardner, 1972).
