Type Locality: Brazil, Amazonas State, Hyutanahan (above Purús).
Vernacular Names: Steere's Spiny-rat.
Synonyms: Proechimys hilda Thomas 1924; Proechimys kermiti Allen 1915; Proechimys liminalis Moojen 1948; Proechimys pachita Thomas 1904; Proechimys rattinus Thomas 1926 .
Distribution: C Peru and N Bolivia eastward into W Brazil.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Placed in goeldii group by Patton (1987). Listed as a subspecies of goeldii in Cabrera (1961:519), but as a distinct species by Anderson (1997) and Patton et al. (2000). Karyotype has 2n=24 and FN=40-42 (Gardner and Emmons, 1984; Patton et al., 2000). Patton et al. (2000) suggested synonyms listed above.
