Type Locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Floresta Nacional de Ipanema, 20 km NW Sorocaba (23 o 26’S, 47 o 37’W); as amended by Emmons et al. (2002) .
Vernacular Names: Blacked-spined Atlantic Tree-rat.
Distribution: SE Brazil, from the state of Rio de Janeiro to Paraná, mainly along the coastal zone, but extending inland to W São Paulo to at least 850 m.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc) as Echimys nigrispinus .
Discussion: Karyotype has 2n=52 (Leite, 2003).
