Type Locality: Brazil, Bahia, 16 km W Porto Seguro, Estação Ecológica do Pau Brasil (16 o 22’S, 39 o 11’W, 40 m alt) .

Vernacular Names: Dark-caped Atlantic Spiny-rat.

Distribution: Known only from the type locality.

Discussion: Listed as Trinomys sp. in Lara and Patton (2000) and placed as the basal member of a clade also containing dimitiatus and iheringi (see also Lara et al., 2002).
