Ixia plicata Linnaeus, Centuria II Plantarum: 4. 1756.
"Habitat in Aethiopia. Burmannus." RCN: 301.
Basionym of: Gladiolus plicatus (L.) L. (1762) .
Lectotype (Lewis in J. S. African Bot., Suppl. 3: 11. 1959): Herb. Linn. No. 59.6, left specimen (LINN) .
Current name: Babiana villosula (J.G. Gmel.) Ker ex Steud. ( Iridaceae).
Note: This has a very confused synonymy. Lewis argued that Babiana plicata Ker is not based on I. plicata, so Linnaeus’ name is not available for use in the genus despite its priority. She was also aware that the Sparrman collection on the right of sheet 59.6 (LINN) was a later addition to the herbarium and therefore restricted her type choice to the specimen to the left.
