Habitat preference: Beier (1963a) recorded C. similis from forest leaf litter and from debris after floods. In Slovakia, Christophoryová (2013) found it in oak-hornbeam forests. In Hungary, it has been found in mixed linden and ash forests, and in meadows (Novák 2013), and in oak forests (Novák 2016). During the present investigation it was found in maple forest, and in mixed forest of maple and oak.

Remarks: the specimens identified by Szent-Ivány (1941) as Withius subruber proved to be representatives of C. similis . The species since has been found in several Hungarian localities (Novák 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016).
