TYPE LOCALITY: U.S. S. R., Altaisk. Krai, near Barnaul, Pavlovsk, Kasmalinsky-Bor .

DISTRIBUTION: Steppes of S. Siberia from Irtysh River to Ussuri region (U.S. S.R.), south to N.W. Mongolia, N.E. China, and Korea.

COMMENT: Includes fumatus; see Orlov and Iskhakova, 1975, Zool. Zh., 54(4):597-604. Corbet, 1978:91, included griseus and pseudogriseus in barabensis; but also see Flint, 1966, Die Zwerghamster der Palaearktischen Fauna, Stuttgart, who considered griseus a distinct allopatric species, and Orlov and Iskhakova, 1975, Zool.
