Mangifera indica Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 200. 1753.
"Habitat in India." RCN: 1624.
Lectotype (Bornstein in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 5: 98. 1989): [icon] “Mau” in Rheede, Hort. Malab. 4: 1, t. 1, t. 2. 1683.
Generitype of Mangifera Linnaeus.
Current name: Mangifera indica L. ( Anacardiaceae).
Note: Herb. Linn. 276.1 (LINN) has been indicated as the type by a number of authors since Fawcett & Rendle (Fl. Jamaica 5: 7. 1926), but it is evidently a later addition to the herbarium and not original material for the name. Although Mukherji (in Lloydia 12: 74, 83. 1949) concluded that no type specimen existed, he treated Hermann’s description as the basis of the species (which is contrary to Art. 8.1). Kostermans & Bompard (The Mangoes: 96, f. 61. 1993) treated an illustration in Herb. Hermann 5: 223 (BM) as the holotype, but their choice is pre-dated by that of Bornstein, which is accepted here.
