Matricaria parthenium Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 890. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae cultis, ruderatis." RCN: 6450.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Clifford: 416, Matricaria 3, 4 sheets (BM) ; Herb. Linn. No. 1013.1 (LINN) .

Current name: Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Sch. Bip. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Grierson (in Davis, Fl. Turkey 5: 268. 1975) noted the existence of material in the Clifford herbarium but did not indicate it as the type. Dillon (in Fieldiana, Bot., n.s., 7: 19. 1981) indicated unspecified (and unseen) material in BM as type. Alavi (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 107: 168. 1983) also indicated Herb. Clifford: 416, Matricaria 3 (BM) as type (as did Jeanmonod in Compl. Prodr. Fl. Corse, Asteraceae I: 230. 1998, wrongly attributing the choice to Grierson). In fact there are four sheets in the Clifford herbarium associated with this name. They do not form part of a single gathering and so none of the above statements effects typification (Art. 9.15).
