Type locality. Bayano Reservoir, Maje Island, Panama.

Bionomics. The immature stages of this species have been collected in sapucaia nut oviposition traps (Vieira et al. 2020). Larvae of Sa. gymnothorax were observed preying on Haemagogus larvae in the laboratory, where larval development lasted 4‒5 weeks at 25°C (Harbach & Pertensen 1992).

Arbovirus infection records. None.

Occurrence in Brazil. States of Amazonas and São Paulo (Mucci et al. 2015; Hutchings et al. 2016, 2018; Cunha et al. 2019).

Occurrence in other countries. Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and Panama (Wilkerson et al. 2021).
