H. similis (James, 1933)

– Proisotoma similis James, 1933: 99

ON James 1933; Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, 1998; Skidmore 1993, 1995; Stebaeva et al. 2016

Remarks: The generic position and even specific status of this species is obscure. It is a member of the genus Cryptopygus in Christiansen & Bellinger (1980, 1998). On www. collembola .org it is treated as a junior synonym of C. agreni (Börner, 1903) which has “no actual Nearctic records” (Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, p. 611). Our interpretation of its position is mainly based on James’s comment that “this form is allied to Axelson’s Finland species, Proisotoma (Isotomina) thermophila, especially in respect to the mucro dentition”.

General distribution: Nearctic.
