Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Crete Island (KR).

Type material: Holotype: male 8.5 mm (ZMB 30632), spring at the shore of Lake Zaros (Limni Votomos), Crete, Greece, under stones and gravel, 35.139971°N, 24.911726°E, (leg. M.L. Zettler & A. Zettler 2017) . Paratypes: female 10mm, data same as for holotype: (leg. M.L. Zettler & A. Zettler A. 2017). The type material of the new species and other material of N. zarosiensis are deposited at the collection of ZMB .

Remarks: Niphargus zarosiensis is another endemic species of genus Niphargus from Crete Island, thus constituting the island as a hot spot of endemism. There is no known phylogenetic analysis and its ecology is unknown.

Etymology: The specific name zarosiensis has its origin from Lake Zaros were the species was found in a spring at the shore line.
