Sauvagesia erecta Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 203. 1753.

"Habitat in Domingo." RCN: 1649.

Lectotype (Whitefoord in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 85. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 283.2 (LINN) .

Generitype of Sauvagesia Linnaeus.

Current name: Sauvagesia erecta L. ( Ochnaceae).

Note: Sastre (in Adansonia, sér . 2, 8: 122. 1968) indicated Plumier material, from Martinique, as the type and (in Caldasia 11(51): 5, 27. 1971), suggested the name was based on a Surian collection drawn by Plumier. However, Linnaeus made no reference to Plumier in either his specific or generic protologues so this material cannot be accepted as original material for the name. Bornstein (in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 5: 300. 1989) stated that 283.1 and 283.2 (LINN) were possible types. It is difficult to be certain if these were part of a single collection but Whitefoord subsequently designated 283.2 (LINN) as lectotype.
