Scrophularia scorodonia Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 620. 1753.

"Habitat in Lusitania & Jersea insula Angliae." RCN: 4484.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 59, f. 5. 1691; Almag. Bot.: 338. 1696 - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 98: 19 (BM-SL) .

Current name: Scrophularia scorodonia L. ( Scrophulariaceae).

Note: Ortega & Devesa (in Ruizia 11: 75. 1993) rejected Dalgaard’s choice (in Opera Bot. 51: 18. 1979) of 773.5 (LINN) as type (it is in any case a post-1753 addition) because they say the name was based on van Royen material. However, concluding, on Veldkamp’s advice, that there was no original van Royen material extant, they chose a neotype from Boerhaave’s herbarium (No. 908.232-872, L). However, as there is a Plukenet plate cited in the protologue, their choice is contrary to Art. 9.6.
