Sisymbrium altissimum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 659. 1753.

"Habitat in Italia, Gallia, Sibiria." RCN: 4795.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 836.33 (LINN); [icon] in Colonna, Ekphr. 1: 266, t. 268. 1606; [icon] in Walther, Design. Pl.: 135 [55], t. 22. 1735.

Generitype of Sisymbrium Linnaeus (vide Payson in Publ. Sci. Univ. Wyoming, Bot. 1: 6. 1922).

Current name: Sisymbrium altissimum L. ( Brassicaceae).

Note: Sisymbrium altissimum, with 836.32 (LINN) as the type, was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 570. 1992). However, the proposal was eventually ruled unnecessary by the General Committee (see Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006 for a review of the history of this and related proposals).

The collection proposed as the conserved type of S. altissimum (and previously treated as the lectotype by authors such as Jafri (in Nasir & Ali, Fl. W. Pakistan 55: 253. 1973) is unannotated by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. As original material is in existence, this choice cannot be treated as a neotypification under Art. 9.8, and the name is therefore untypified.

See an extensive review of the generic typification by Mackenzie in Rhodora 27: 28-32 (1927).
