Stipa avenacea Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 78. 1753.
"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 660.
Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 122. 1908): Clayton 621, Herb. Linn. No. 94.5 (LINN; iso- BM?, US, fragm.) .
Current name: Piptochaetium avenaceum (L.) Parodi ( Poaceae).
Note: Baum (in Canad. J. Bot. 45: 1851. 1967) argued that Hitchcock’s choice was flawed and that Clayton 621 (BM) is the holotype. However, the material in LINN designated as type by Hitchcock is original material for the name, and his typification has priority.
