Type Locality: Morocco, between Morocco City and Mogador, Sierzet.

Vernacular Names: Whitaker's Shrew.

Synonyms: Crocidura essaouiranensis Vesmanis and Vesmanis 1980; Crocidura matruhensis Setzer 1960; Crocidura mesatanensis Vesmanis and Vesmanis 1980; Crocidura zaianensis Vesmanis and Vesmanis 1980 .

Distribution: Atlantic and Mediterranean parts of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia; one record from coastal Egypt (Hutterer, 1994). Range in Morocco mapped by Aulagnier and Thévenot (1987); in Algeria by Rzebik-Kowalska (1988); and in Tunisia by Sara and Zanca (1992).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
