Type Locality: Spain, Madrid Prov., Jarama River, San Martin de la Vega.
Vernacular Names: Mediterranean Water Shrew.
Synonyms: Neomys amphibius Brehm 1826; Neomys josti Martino 1940; Neomys milleri Mottaz 1907; Neomys mokrzeckii Martino 1917; Neomys rhenanus Lehmann 1976; Neomys soricoides Ognev 1922 .
Distribution: Temperate woodlands of Europe, from Portugal to Poland and east to Voronesh, Russia; N Asia Minor and N Iran.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Reviewed by Spitzenberger (1990 b); European range mapped by Mitchell-Jones et al. (1999). Sorex amphibius Brehm, 1826 is probably an earlier name for the species (von Knorre, pers. comm.), although it has to be treated as a nomen oblitum. Karyotype from Spain to Turkey uniformly 2n = 52, FN = 98 (Zima et al., 1998).
