Type Locality: "Habitat in Russiae aquosis." .
Vernacular Names: Desman.
Synonyms: Desmana moschatus Linnaeus 1958; Desmana moscovitica (Geoffroy 1811) .
Distribution: Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan; Don, Volga, and Ural Rivers and their tributaries; introduced into Tachan and Tartas Rivers (Ob basin) and Dnepr River. Almost extinct in Belarus.
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
