Distribution: Mountains of Honshu (Japan).
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Imaizumi (1970 b) and Abe et al. (1991) included this species in the genus Euroscaptor, while Corbet (1978 c) placed it in Talpa . Three populations have been named, of which othai represents "probably a distinct species", according to Imaizumi (1970 b); a view supported by Yoshiyuki (1988 b). Karyotype (2n = 36, FN = 52) described by Kawada et al. (2001).
