Label details: ‘N. Zealand’.
Type locality: ‘found by Mr. Brackenridge at the Bay of Islands, New Zealand’ (Gould 1852: 34); incorrectly stated as ‘New Holland’ by Gould (1846: 178) .
Previous illustrations of type material: Gould (1856: pl. 5, fig. 65, a–c); Tryon (1887 [from Gould 1856]: pl. 21, figs. 9, 10).
Remarks: Original description based on one or more specimens collected during the United States Exploring Expedition. Conspecific with Nanina ? kivi Gray, 1843 and Helix radiaria Pfeiffer, 1855 (Hutton, 1884b: 189; Hedley & Suter, 1893: 633; Suter, 1894d: 247; Suter, 1913b: 653). Historical records of this species from Australia (e.g., Gould 1846: 178; Pfeiffer 1848: 29; Cox 1868a: 35, 1868b: 66) were in error.
Current Taxonomy: Treated as a junior synonym of Nanina ? kivi Gray, 1843 by Hutton (1884b: 189), Hedley & Suter (1893: 633) and Suter (1894d: 247, 1913b: 653).
