Type locality: ‘ Auckland, New Zealand’ (Gray, 1850: 167) .

Previous illustrations of type material: There were no illustrations accompanying Gray’s description; a shell illustrated by Pfeiffer (1854 [in Pfeiffer, 1853–1854]: pl. 40, figs. 17, 18) may or may not be from the type series.

Remarks: The original description of this species, which was reproduced by Gray (1851: 67), was based on material that was collected at or near Auckland c. 1847–1849 by Major Joseph Greenwood, and sent to the British Museum. Type species of Liarea Pfeiffer, 1853b: 217, by monotypy.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Liarea egea (Gray, 1850) by Powell (1954: 284, 1979: 82) and Spencer et al. (2009: 203).

Distribution: New Zealand; northern North Island, Hauraki Gulf islands (Powell 1954).
