Helix reinga Pfeiffer, 1846

Pl. 11, fig. B

Pfeiffer, 1846. Symbolae ad Historiam Heliceorum, 3: 73.

Type material: Syntypes (3), NHMUK 197019 (dry shell material); ex Museum Cuming (Acc. No. 1829) .

Label details: ‘Gray, N. Zealand t. 1 f. 11, 12’, ‘ R. reinga Gray, N. Australia’

Type locality: Vicinity of Broome, Western Australia, according to Solem (1997); listed as ‘Shark Bay, Western Australia’ by Smith (1992: 147); incorrectly stated as ‘Nova Seelandia’ by Pfeiffer (1846: 73).

Previous illustrations of type material: Reeve (1852 [in 1851–1854]: pl. 128, fig. 772), Pfeiffer (1849 [in 1849–1853]: pl. 73, figs. 8, 9).

Remarks: Authorship of this species was incorrectly attributed to Gray by Pfeiffer (1846: 73, 1848: 289), Hector (1873: 19), Martens (1873: 9), Hutton (1880: 16, 1884b: 194) and Suter (1892c: 282), apparently based on a description and illustrations in an ‘Unpublished list of New Zealand shells’ by Gray (see Hutton 1880: 16). The type material of Helix reinga was mis-localised, and there have been no subsequent valid records of this species from New Zealand (see Martens 1873: 9; Gillies 1882: 169; Hutton 1884b: 186, 188; Suter 1892c: 282). Martens (1873: 9) noted that Helix reinga was ”nearly allied to H. dringi Pfr. from Northern Australia ”, and it was subsequently recognised as being endemic to the coastal area of northwestern Australia (Iredale 1939: 59; Smith 1992: 147; Solem 1997: 1776). Helix reinga Pfeiffer, 1846 is the type species of Rhagada Albers & Martens, 1860, by original designation.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Rhagada reinga (Pfeiffer, 1846) by Iredale (1939: 59), Smith (1992: 147), Solem (1997: 1773) and Stanisic et al. (2018: 324).

Distribution: Western Australia; vicinity of Broome (Solem 1997: 1776, map 41; see also Burghardt & Köhler 2015: 48).
