Hyrcanogobius Iljin, 1928 (1 species)

Etymology: Greek, Hyrcania = old Persian region near of Caspian Sea + Latin, gobius = gudgeon.

Remarks: Originally distinguished as a separate genus due to the reduced head lateral-line canal system (Iljin 1928) but was later suggested as being congeneric with Knipowitschia by Economidis & Miller (1990). However, as noted under Knipowitschia by Miller (2004c), its possession of transverse interorbital rows and the much greater extent of its anterior transverse row tra appear to warrant its recognition as a separate genus based on its head lateral-line system (Miller 2004c). A detailed morphological and molecular analysis along with Knipowitschia thus is warranted.
