Taxonomy. Myotis phanluongi Borisenko, Kruskop & Ivanova, 2008,
“Hon Ba Mountain, ca. 30 km WSW of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam (12.1113° N, 103.953° E, 1250 m ASL.).”
Subgenus Myotis; siligorensis species group. Monotypic.
Distribution. Known from three localities in S Vietnam.
Descriptive notes. Head-body 39 mm,tail 35 mm, ear 12: 3 mm, hindfoot 7- 4 mm, forearm 33.5- 36- 91mm; weight c. 4 g. Fur of Phan Luong’s Myotis is soft and thick. Dorsal pelage is brown (bases darker); venteris a little lighter. Bare face, membranes, and ears are pale brown (paler than in the Himalayan Whiskered Myotis, M. siligorensis). Ears and tragus are narrow and elongated. Wingsare attached slightly higher than base of outer toe, and feet are comparatively small, ¢.50% oftibia lengths. Baculum is only 0-4 mm long, straight, peg-like, and a little widened at base, with no urethral groove or concavity at venter. Skull is lightly built, with low rostrum; forehead region is steep, and braincase is globularly domed; P? and P* are small and in tooth row; canines are small and about equalin heightto their respective posterior premolars; and lower molars are nyctalodont or semi-nyctalodont.
Habitat. In or near mountainous primary mixed forests with streams and brooks at elevations of 900-1500 m.
Food and Feeding. Phan Luong’s Myotis is fast and maneuverable in flight and has been observed foraging in treeless areas 3-7 m aboveground.
Breeding. No information.
Activity patterns. Calls of the Phan Luong’s Myotis are steep FM sweeps, with peak frequencies of 42-45 kHz (Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong) and 60 kHz (Loc Bao).
Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.
Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List. Phan Luong’s Myotisis currently only known from a few specimens spread over three localities, and virtually nothing is known aboutits ecology or threats.
