Asplenium erosum Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1324. 1759.

["Habitat in India occidentali."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1540 (1763). RCN: 7851.

Lectotype (Underwood in Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 33: 196. 1906): [icon] "Lonchitis major, pinnis angustioribus leviter denticulatis superiori latere auriculatis" in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 1: 78, t. 33, f. 2. 1707.

Current name: Asplenium erosum L. ( Aspleniaceae).

Note: Underwood clearly designated the cited Sloane plate as the type, pre-dating the choice made by Weatherby (in Contr. Gray Herb. 114: 20. 1936) of 1250.22 (LINN). Unfortunately, Sloane’s plant appears to be identifiable as A. auritum Sw. rather than A. erosum though most authors have adopted Weatherby’s type choice. However, Underwood’s choice has priority, and it appears that a proposal for the conservation of A. erosum, with a conserved type, may be necessary.
