Achyranthes aspera Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 204. 1753, typ. cons.

"Habitat in Sicilia, Zeylona, Jamaica." RCN: 1654.

Conserved type (Townsend in Nasir & Ali, Fl. W. Pakistan 71: 35. 1974): Herb. Hermann 2: 69, No. 105 (BM-000621744) .

Generitype of Achyranthes Linnaeus, nom. cons.

Current name: Achyranthes aspera L. ( Amaranthaceae).

Note: Achyranthes aspera was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 555. 1992) and this was eventually approved by the General Committee (see review of the history of this proposal by Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006).

Although Townsend (in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1: 38. 1980) restricted his original type choice (1974) to one of the specimens on p. 69, his earlier unrestricted choice appeared in the conservation proposal and the conserved type is therefore listed in the Vienna Code (2006) in this way.
