Atragene sibirica Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 543. 1753.
"Habitat in Sibiriae subhumidis ubique." RCN: 4027.
Lectotype (Stearn, Introd. Linnaeus Sp. Pl. (Ray Soc. ed.): 82. 1957): Herb. Linn. No. 711.7 (LINN) .
Current name: Clematis alpina (L.) Mill. subsp. sibirica (Mill.) Kuntze ( Ranunculaceae).
Note: Stearn says that this is "a new species described from a specimen (711.7) in his [ Linnaeus’] herbarium", and Serov & Jarvis (in Taxon 37: 167. 1988) accept it as the type, but treat the name as ambiguous. They did not propose the name for rejection because Clematis sibirica Mill, is a new species, not a recombination of the Linnaean epithet, which prevents the use of the latter in Clematis . Traditional usage is therefore not threatened.
