Adonis autumnalis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 1: 771. 1762, nom. illeg.

"Habitat inter segetes Europae australis." RCN: 4056.

Replaced synonym: Adonis annua L. (1753) .

Lectotype (Bobrov in Komarov, Fl. U.R.S.S. 7: 539. 1937): Herb. Linn. No. 714.3 (LINN) .

Current name: Adonis annua L. ( Ranunculaceae).

Note: Bobrov stated "Type in the Linnaean herbarium" (rather than the far commoner, and ineffective, "Type in London"). 714.3 (LINN) is the only sheet there that can be associated with this name so this choice is accepted as the type. Steinberg (in Webbia 25: 305. 1971) reproduced the protologue and treated the name as a nomen ambiguum (rather than as a nomen illegitimum). Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 555. 1992) independently reached the same conclusion as Bobrov.
