Aristida americana Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 879. 1759.

["Habitat in Jamaica."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 122 (1762). RCN: 689.

Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 123. 1908; Davidse in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 247. 2000): Browne, Herb. Linn. No. 98.2 (LINN; iso- US) .

Current name: Bouteloua americana (L.) Scribn. ( Poaceae).

Note: Hitchcock (in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 123. 1908) designated a Browne specimen at LINN as type but did not specify which of the two Browne specimens he intended. Griffiths (in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 14: 407. 1912) made a similar statement while Judziewicz (in Görts-van Rijn, Fl. Guianas, ser. A, 8: 50. 1990) indicated 98.2 and 98.3 (LINN) as syntypes. None of these statements is an effective typification in its own right, so sheet 98.2 (LINN) was formally chosen as lectotype by Davidse, a restriction of Hitchcock’s original choice under Art. 9.15 of the Code.
