Allium ascalonicum Linnaeus, Flora Palaestina: 17. 1756.
["Habitat in Palaestina. Hasselquist."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 429 (1762). RCN: 2368.
Lectotype (de Wilde-Duyfjes in Taxon 22: 61. 1973): Hasselquist, Herb. Linn. No. 419.24, left specimen (LINN) .
Current name: Allium hierochuntinum Boiss. ( Liliaceae / Alliaceae).
Note: See discussion by Mathew (Rev. Allium Sect. Allium: 144. 1996), who acknowledges that, because of its type, A. ascalonicum L. is the earliest name for A. hierochuntinum Boiss. Following Stearn (in Bull. Brit. Mus. (Nat. Hist.), Bot. 2: 181. 1960), he informally rejected the former because it has been applied more or less continuously since 1762 to a well-known cultivar of A. cepa L. However, no formal rejection proposal has been made.
