Antholyza merianella Linnaeus, Systema Vegetabilium, ed. 13: 77. 1774.
RCN: 314.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 60.7 (LINN); [icon] in Miller, Fig. Pl. Gard. Dict. 2: 198, t. 297, f. 2. 1760.
Current name: Homoglossum merianella (Thunb.) Baker ( Iridaceae).
Note: This name has been treated as illegitimate by some authors (see Milne-Redhead in Bot. Mag. 160: t. 9510. 1938; de Vos in J. S. African Bot. 42: 333-334. 1976). However, this does not seem to be the case because Linnaeus did not cite Watsonia humilis Mill. (1768) as a synonym of A. merianella and Miller did not cite his own t. 279, f. 2 (1760) in publishing W. humilis (while Linnaeus did). Matters are complicated by the existence of the heterotypic Gladiolus merianellus Thunb. (1784) - see Roux (in J. S. African Bot. 46: 366. 1980).
