Veronica latifolia Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 13. 1753, nom. utique rej. prop.

"Habitat in Helvetia, Bithynia." RCN: 92.

Lectotype (Webb in Heywood in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 65: 266. 1972): Herb. Linn. No. 26.52 (LINN) .

Current name: Veronica teucrium L. ( Scrophulariaceae).

Note: Smith (in Rees, Cycl. 37: Veronica No. 58. 1819) described a specimen in LINN of which Pennell (in Rhodora 23. 32. 1921) says “… the specimen of the Linnaean herbarium should stand as type". However, Smith’s published account does not distinguish between sheets 26.52 and 26.53 (which are not part of a single gathering) so Pennell’s statement, and a similar, later one (in Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia Monogr. 1: 35. 1935) do not effect typification. Webb, in typifying the name, also informally rejected it as a nomen ambiguum. Martínez Ortega & al. (in Taxon 55: 538. 2006) subsequently made a formal proposal for the rejection of the name.
