Geographical distribution: Canada in the Nearctic region to Argentina in the Neotropical region (not reported from Chile); introduced into the Hawaiian Islands.

Habitat: shore or floating vegetation of lentic habitats or running fresh or brackish water; found in Cuba from sea-level up to 600 m, being common in clear-water lagoons.
