Diagnosis. Adult (Fig. 4) with wingspan 17.5–24.0 mm. Scythropiodes approximans is similar to S. tribula in appearance by having a similar forewing pattern. It can be separated from the latter by the valva that is suddenly produced from distal 1/3 to a slender finger-like process in the male genitalia (Fig. 19), and by the gear-like signum with 8–11 radiated arms but without any denticles in the female genitalia (Figs 34 a–c). In S. tribula, the valva is slightly narrowed from distal 1/3 and has a short apical spine in the male genitalia (Fig. 20); and the ovate signum has denticles but lacks radiated arms in the female genitalia (Park & Wu 1997: 49–49a).
