Genus Phimenes Giordani Soika, 1992

Phimenes Giordani Soika 1992: 41, 66, replacement name for Phi de Saussure, 1855, nec de Saussure, 1854. Type species: Vespa arcuata Fabricius, 1775, by subsequent designation (Bequaert 1926: 487), as type species of Phi de Saussure, 1855 . Phi de Saussure 1855: 132, 145, name for division IV of genus Eumenes Latreille in de Saussure 1852: 63 (invalid homonym of Phi de Saussure, 1854). Type species: Vespa arcuata Fabricius, 1775, by subsequent designation (Bequaert 1926: 487). Phimenes: Girish Kumar 2013b: 120 .

Diagnosis. Mandibles elongate, longer than length of clypeus. Clypeus little longer than wide, shallowly emarginate or widely truncate apically (Fig. 2). Cephalic foveae absent. Vertex narrow and sloping behind lateral ocelli. Thorax globular in shape, longer than wide. Anterior face of pronotum smooth and shiny without medial pits or foveae. Pronotal carina generally absent. Notauli absent. Epicnemial carina absent. Pretegular carina present. Tegula longer than wide, weakly emarginate posteriorly, posterior end not reaching end of parategula. Axillary fossa wide. Sutellum weakly convex. Metanotum not dentate. Propodeal dorsum below plane of metanotum, sloping posteroventrally. Superior carina absent. Propodeal orifice wide dorsally. Submarginal carina not produced as pointed/rounded process above valvula. Propodeal vuvlula not separated from submarginal carina. Metasoma petiolate (Fig. 65), petiole length 1.25 × or more than 1.25x length of mesosoma. T1 usually smooth, elongate (Fig. 65). S1 rather gradually widening towards apex, lateral margins of T1 not meeting ventrally usually visible along entire petiole length. T2 not petiolate at base. S2 not concave medially. T2 without apical lamella. Mid tibia with one apical spur. SMC2 basally acute. Prestigma longer than pterostigma (Fig. 58). ♂: F11 hooked, pointed apically and usually longer than preceding flagellomere (Fig. 9); F8 with a cavity on inner margin. Body length usually more than 20 mm.
