Genus Rhynchium Spinola, 1806

Rygchium Spinola 1806: 84, genus (incorrect original spelling of Rhynchium Spinola). Type species: Rygchium europeaum Spinola, 1806 [= Vespa oculata Fabricius, 1781], by monotypy.

Eurrhynchium Dalla Torre 1904: 33, name for division II of Rhynchium Spinola in de Saussure 1852: 105 . Type species: Vespa oculata Fabricius, 1781, by subsequent designation (van der Vecht & Carpenter 1990: 53).

Diagnosis. Mandibles elongate, longer than length of clypeus, distinctly cross each other. Clypeus little longer than wide, normally truncate apically. Cephalic foveae present in depression on vertex of female. Vertex not sloping behind ocelli. Pronotal anterior face smooth and shiny without median foveae. Pronotal carina complete. Epicnemial carina present. Pretegular carina present. Tegula longer than wide, emarginate adjoining parategula, not reaching posterior end of parategula (Fig. 30). Notauli absent. Scutellum and posterior part of mesoscutum smooth, at most finely and sparsely punctuate, slightly shiny (Fig. 30). Metanotum angled, depressed medially and bluntly projecting laterally, as seen from above. Axillary fossa narrow (Fig. 30). Metanotum not dentate. Propodeal dorsum below plane of metanotum. Superior carina absent. Propodeum with median longitudinal furrow with transverse ridges posteriorly. Propodeum toothed laterally (crenulate). Propodeal valvula not free from submarginal carina posteriorly. Metasoma sessile, T1 wider than long. T1 and T2 without lamellae (Fig. 84). SMC3 separated from apex of marginal cell by a distance longer than its minimum width (Fig. 61). Parastigma as long as pterostigma (Fig. 61). Mid tibia with one apical spur (Fig. 46). Ƌ: F11 hook like, rounded apically; F11, F10 shorter than previous ones; no cavity on inner margin. Body length usually 15–25 mm.

Distribution. Australian, Ethiopian, Oriental and Palaearctic Regions.
