Penthoscapha doormanensis sp. n.
(Figs. 10–11, 23, 28, 34, 47–49, 69, 71)
Diagnosis. Elytra subglabrous; striae regularly punctate, intervals even, without costae, interval 4 sometimes with band of yellowish exocuticular pigment; sutural interval subapically forming blunt protrusion (Fig. 23).
Description. Holotype, male (Fig. 11; paratype fig. 10). Length. Total length 15.0 mm; pronotum + elytron 11.5 mm.
Coloration black except femora and tibiae reddish brown. Body sparsely setose with thin recumbent setae; elytra subglabrous, interval 4 originally covered by yellow crust of exocuticular pigments, subsequently splintered off and now missing.
Head with faint lustre, dorsally sparsely setose, especially bordering eyes; between eyes 1.07 X as wide as vertical diameter of eye, densely punctate with coarse punctures, medially with shallow fovea continued posteriorly as median furrow of vertex. Eyes markedly prominent from outline of head. Gena 1.12 X as long as vertical diameter of eye.
Rostrum (Fig. 34) 1.80 X longer than wide at base; maximum width in front of antennal insertion 1.41 X width at base. Dorsum almost flat, with very shallow impression, containing very indistinct median ridge; in front of eyes with shallow sublateral impressions.
Antenna. Funicle + club 1.75 X length of scape; club 3.25 X as long as wide.
Thorax. Pronotum ca. as long as wide [1.02 X wider than long]; sides gently sinuate, widest in apical half; disc densely punctate, weakly rugose, wrinkles becoming more distinct towards sides; with very shallow impression in apical half. Thoracic venter moderately densely setose with thin setae not concealing surface.
Elytron medially free, 4.65 X longer than wide between humeri; at greatest width 1.19 X wider than between humeri; side evenly rounded; shining, weakly coriaceous; striae regular, distinct, moderately impressed; intervals flat, with shallow transverse wrinkles, without longitudinal ridges, interval 4 slightly depressed; sutural interval at apical declivity (Fig. 23) forming sparsely setose, blunt protrusion visible in lateral aspect. Ala (Fig. 28) vestigial, length 9.5 mm, 1.10 X length of elytron.
Legs. Femora long, slender; metafemur in repose slightly exceeding elytral apex. Tibiae ventrally sparsely denticulate; metatibia apically with glabrous bevel; posterior distal comb of metatibia consisting of few dentiform setae, terminating ventrally on a protuberance (“secondary mucro”). Tarsi elongate, tarsomere 1 of metatarsus 2.3 X as long as wide, tarsomere 2 1.2 X as long as wide.
Abdomen. Ventrite 1–2 weakly punctate, sparsely setose; ventrite 5 flat, sparsely setose. Aedeagus (Figs. 47–48) with sides subparallel beyond apical orifice, subapically distinctly constricted, apex extended, subtruncate; In lateral aspect apical tip weakly curved dorsad. Transfer apparatus (Fig. 49) ca. 2 X as long as wide at base.
Intraspecific variation of males. Length. Total length 13.8–15.0 mm (n=3, x =14.4 ± 0.6); pronotum + elytron of males 10.5–12.0 mm (n=3, x =11.3 ± 0.8). Coloration largely black, or legs, elytra and pronotum reddish brown; longitudinal band of exocuticular pigment on elytral interval 4 easily splintering off from specimens without leaving traces; thus, specimens in collections presumably usually without it. Rostrum 1.60–1.85 X longer than wide at base (n=3, x =1.75 ± 0.13); maximum width in front of antennal insertion 1.33–1.41 X width at base (n=3, x =1.38 ± 0.04). Antenna. Funicle + club 1.75–1.79 X length of scape (n=3, x =1.77 ± 0.02). Elytron 4.40–4.65 X longer than wide between humeri (n=3, x =4.45 ± 0.18), at greatest width 1.15–1.19 X wider than between humeri (n=3, x =1.17 ± 0.02).
