Gyrinidae

Adults glide on the surface of ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. Th ey often congregate and swim rapidly in circles when alarmed, giving rise to their common name of whirligig. Adults are scavengers, feeding on dead and dying insects on the water surface, whereas larvae are predaceous on insect larvae and nymphs (Roughley 2000a).
