Notes:—The name published by Rouy & Camus is problematic. They reported: “Forme. – Saxifraga lantoscana Boiss. et Reut. (pro specie)”. It was interpreted as a subvariety by Engler & Irmscher (1919). For the correct ranking of the name, after the afterthoughts of the authors, see Heywood (1958) and Art. 37.5 of ICN. The plant labeled by J. Clarion as “ Saxifraga sednensis ” was collected in Seyne (SE France) and named by Sternberg (1831) as S. lingulata var. clarionii . In Sternberg’s (1831) circumscription, it includes S. australis (cf. his “Tabula XVII”, which is original material); the variety was published in April, and therefore it might claim some priority over S. lingulata var. australis, published by Tenore in the summer. We were not able to locate any of the syntypes; however, by locality, we exclude that he plant collected by Clarion could refer to S. australis, but presumably to S. lantoscana . The Art. 35.1 of ICN states that “a name of a taxon below the rank of genus is not validly published unless the name of the genus or species to which it is assigned is validly published”, but apparently this does not prevent the validity of the subvarieties and forms published by Engler & Irmscher (1919) under the invalid “ S. lingulata var. bellardii ” and reported above.
