Mictaxius Kensley & Heard, 1991: 527.— Poore 1994: 104.— Poore 1997: 406.— Sakai 2011: 534 -535.
Type species. Mictaxius thalassicola Kensley & Heard, 1991: 527.— Poore 1994: 104.— Poore 1997: 406.— Sakai 2011: 534–535.
Diagnosis. Gonochoristic. Rostrum obsolete. Linea thalassinica complete. Thoracic sternite 7 with broad anterior part, well separating cushion-like coxae of pereopods 4. Pleomere 1 tergite with flat broad anterior part. Eyestalks flattened, contiguous, with acute apex; pigmented cornea dorsal. Antennal scaphocerite minute and articulating. Maxilliped 3 merus without distal tooth, exopod reduced, without crista dentata, ischium and merus without brush of stiff setae. Pereopod 5 simple. Setal-rows on anterolateral carapace, pereopods 2–4 propodus, pleomeres 1 and 6 or 1–6 (1 row each). Pleopod 1 of male absent. Pleopod 2 of male with appendices masculina and interna totally fused, with terminal stiff setae and apical hooks. Pleopods 2–5 rami without marginal filaments. Uropodal endopod without transverse row of short spiniform setae; exopod with dorsal plate.
Included species. Mictaxius arno Poore, 1997; M. thalassicola Kensley & Heard, 1991 .
Remarks. Mictaxius is recognised by it short rostrum, being gonochoristic, having the appendix interna of the male pleopod 2 far exceeding the fused appendix masculina, and having a dorsal plate or notch on the uropodal exopod.
Sakai (2011) included Mictaxius arno in his new genus, Garyia . As discussed below under Thomassinia, M. arno bears no similarity to Thomassinia moorea Poore, 1997, type species of Garyia, itself an indubitable species of Thomassinia . Sakai (2011: 537) listed Poore’s (1997) cf. Mictaxius sp. as ‘ Thomassinia sp. 1 (Poore, 1997)’ but the single specimen does not belong in this genus (see discussion under Heardaxius salvati above).
