5. Glyphidops (Glyphidops) obscurus Hennig

Glyphidops obscurus Hennig, 1937: 260 . Type locality: Peru, Pachitea river. HT ♂ [SMT]. Glyphidops (Glyphidops) obscurus; Aczél, 1961: 311.

Diagnosis. Body brown to dark brown with bluish reflections. Frontal vitta yellow. Fronto-orbital plate brown, sometimes paler on middpoint, but always brown anteriorly; anterior fronto-orbital seta hair-like and weak. First flagellomere oblong, length twice width; arista dorso-apical. Genal seta hair-like.

Male. Body length 5.8–9.0 mm. Wing length 5.2–7.0 mm and width 1.6–1.9 mm. Brown to dark brown with bluish reflections; head and thorax partly yellow (Fig. 5 A).

Head. Slightly elongate in lateral view; dorsally as long as wide: 1.4–1.8 mm length and 1.4–1.6 mm width. Frontal vitta yellow (Fig. 5 C); fronto-orbital plate brown, sometimes paler on middpoint, but always brown anteriorly. Postocellar seta convergent; length twice transverse diameter of ocellar tubercle; inner vertical seta straight and equal to postocellar seta; outer vertical seta curved, divergent and equal to postocellar seta. Genal seta hair-like and same length as postocellar seta. Postgena subtly narrowing posteriorly and ventrally rounded. Occiput bluish; height three times length (Fig. 5 D). Antennal base brown. Antenna length, 60% length of head. Scape yellow; 0.2 mm long. Pedicel same color as scape; 0.2–0.3 mm long; inner process of pedicel elongate, finger-like. First flagellomere oblong, subtly wider at base; yellow and darkened on dorsal and lateral margins; 0.5–0.6 mm long: length twice width. Arista dorso-apical with dense white pubescence.

Thorax. Pleuron same color as thorax dorsally. Anterior notopleural seta absent. Posterior notopleural seta slightly curved; slightly longer than scutellar seta. Supra-alar seta equal to scutellar seta. Postalar seta equal to posterior notopleural seta. Dorsocentral seta subequal to scutellar seta. Scutellar yellow median stripe inconspicuous; scutellar seta straight, 40% length of scutellum. Proepisternum with three or four anteroventral yellow setulae. Katepisternal seta hair-like to spine-like. Katatergite length 1.6 times height. Metepimeron yellow with dorsal brown spot.

Legs. Mid coxa with one lateral seta. Femora velvety yellow with proximal, median and apical inconspicuous yellowish-brown rings, in some cases two, one or none; mid femur anteriorly with two or three median setae.

Wing (Fig. 5 E). Basicosta without seta. Halter whitish with knob blackish-brown.

Abdomen. Same color as thorax, dorsally paler. Syntergite 7+8 shiny. Epandrium pale yellowish-brown and dorso-apically velvety.

Female. Similar to male, differs as follows: body length 5.9–7.6 mm (Fig. 5 B). Wing length 5.0– 6.6 mm and width 1.3–1.8 mm. Katerpisternal seta absent. Fore coxa whitout anterolateral seta. Oviscape yellowish-brown with lateral and distal margins paler; length 1.6–2.0 times maximum width.

Comments. After examine the material redescribed and referred by Aczél (1961) as Glyphidops (Glyphidops) flavipes Wiedemann, we find it was a misidentification and belong to G. (G.) obscurus . We have not examined the Nerius flavipes type material, which was declared “inquerenda” by Steyskal (1968). Of the paratypes of G. (G.) obscurus designated by Hennig (1937), we only consider three females conspecific, with the other specimens described as the new species G. (G.) coracinus . These two species are very similar in size, color and general morphology, differentiated by the characters on Table 1.

Carlos, 800m / Coll.W. Schnuse/ Paratypus, Glyphidops obscurus, Hennig (without head) [ZMHB].
