STATUS. — Two subspecies are present: A. r. ralloides (Scopoli, 1769), Palaearctic migrant and A. r. paludivaga Clancey, 1968, Resident; Breeding.

REMARK. — According to Borrow & Demey (2014) in Burkina Faso the species is present with both the African A. r. paludivaga and the Palaearctic A. r. ralloides, almost indistinguishable in the field.
