Holotype: not known to exist, not found in BMNH in 2005; type locality: St. Barthélemy, Lesser Antilles .

Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species (Meinert 1886; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1942 a, 1974).

Distribution: West Indies in general (Attems 1930), though I do not know of a record from an island other than St. Barthélemy (Bücherl 1942 a, 1974). Maps: none.

Remarks: Kraepelin (1903) and Brölemann (1909) regarded S. crudelis as a synonym of S. alternans Leach, 1815 .
