polymorpha Wood, 1861:11 .

Lectotype (ANSP); lectotype locality: Fort Riley, Riley Co., Kansas, USA .

Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species (Wood 1862, 1865; Kraepelin 1903; Shelley 2002).

Anatomical illustration s: Kraepelin (1903, fig. 155), Shelley (2002, figs. 12–25).

Distribution: Washington, Idaho, Montana, & South Dakota, USA, at least as far south as Guerrero, Mexico, & possibly Belize; introduced to the Hawaiian Islands ( Shelley 2000). Scolopendra polymorpha does not occur at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains and associated ranges in the US, so its range is not continuous in the north. Map: Shelley (2002, fig. 26 [US range only]).

Remarks: Attems (1930) regarded S. polymorpha as a subspecies of S. viridis Say, 1821 . Shelley (2002) discussed the difficulties in determining its precise taxonomic status, as S. polymorpha appears to hybridize with S. viridis in central & western Texas and New Mexico, but occurs sympatrically with, and differs distinctly from, the latter in Utah and Arizona.
